Resources to Detect Plagiarism
There are several excellent online resources to help you detect plagiarism.
The Plagiarism Resource Center - http://plagiarism.phys.virginia.edu/ Free software that allows teachers to compare papers and determine if one is plagiarized, plus links to other resources.Center for Academic Integrity - http://www.academicintegrity.org/ Provides a forum to identify, affirm, and promote the values of academic integrity among students. It is affiliated with the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University. Anti-plagiarism Strategies - http://www.virtualsalt.com/antiplag.htm Ideas to use in preventing and detecting plagiarism. Cut-and-Paste Plagiarism - http://alexia.lis.uiuc.edu/~janicke/plagiary.htm Preventing, detecting and tracking online plagiarism. In addition you can use Google. For example, suppose a student is writing a paper on taconite mining in Minnesota. The student writes:
"Taconite is a low-grade iron ore. When the high-grade natural iron ore was plentiful, taconite was considered a waste rock and not used. But as the supply of high-grade natural ore decreased, industry began to view taconite as a resource. Dr. E.W. Davis of the University of Minnesota, along with other scientists and engineers, conducted years of laboratory tests and experiments to find a way to take the iron ore out of the taconite rock. After many years of hard work, a process was developed to create taconite pellets. Taconite saved Minnesota's iron ore mining industry."
Let's choose a short string of words and enter it in Google. By entering "taconite was considered a waste rock," Google gives us, at the top of the list, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the source for this plagiarized piece.
Visting some of the sites that give away or sell research papers can be an informative experience. If you have Web projection capability, you might do this visiting in class and show the students (1) that you know about these sites and (2) that the papers are often well below your expectations for quality, timeliness, and research. There is a list of many of these sites at Termpapers.com at and at Internet Paper Mills
